HUD Announces Continuum of Care Funding and ESG Awards
On Tuesday, January 25, 2005 the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced approximately $1.4 billion in homeless assistance funding. The awards will fund the Continuum of Care grants and Emergency Shelter Grants.

The Continuum of Care grants received $1.244 billion of funding to provide housing and services to homeless persons. These Continuum grants are awarded through a competitive process to local communities. The grants provide the flexibility communities need to meet the needs of their homeless clients. Continuum grants fund outreach and assessment programs at the local level as well as provide transitional and permanent housing to homeless persons and families.

The Emergency Shelter Grants received $159 million of funds that will be distributed to communities on a needs based formula. Emergency Shelter Grants convert buildings into homeless shelters, assists in the operation of local shelters and funds related social service and prevention programs.
