Bernard S. Arons, M.D., has led a diverse career focused on the improvement of behavioral health services. He currently is Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of NDRI, National Development and Research Institutes, Inc. Its primary mission is to advance scientific knowledge and contribute to prevention of substance abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS, and other related social and health concerns. Dr. Arons previously served as Director of the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. There he worked closely with Surgeon General David Satcher to publish the first-ever Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, which enhanced national awareness of mental health. From studies on parity in mental health coverage to initiatives combating school violence, CMHS became, under Dr. Arons’ leadership, a leading voice for mental health. He served as Advisor on Mental Health Issues to Tipper Gore, Office of the Vice President and Chair, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Working Group for the President's Task Force on National Health Reform. Previously, Dr. Arons was a psychiatrist and administrator at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he had responsibility for its clinical care and deinstitutionalization plan. Dr. Arons continues to practice psychiatry and serves as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown and George Washington University Schools of Medicine and Adjunct Professor at Dartmouth College Medical School.
