Brenda Coleman-Beattie, M.A., is a leading advocate for people with development disabilities and mental illness. Her sister suffers from both conditions. Beginning in 1994, Ms. Coleman-Beattie’s professional skills in financial and operations management were sought in the behavioral health care and developmental disability fields. She has provided effective leadership for design, implementation, and management of public mental health care programs. From 1996 to 1999, she was Vice President for public sector programs for ValueOptions, formerly Value Behavioral Health (VBH). She is past president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Austin chapter and served as a board member of NAMI Texas. A 1992 graduate of Texas Partners in Policymaking, she is also a member of the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work Advisory Council and is a gubernatorial appointee to the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities Board. Additionally, she has provided support to the annual Central Texas African American Family Support Conference and has served as its emcee for the past five years. She received her B.A. in International Relations from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and her M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
