Tribal Medication-Assisted Treatment in California

Since 2019, TAC has provided technical assistance to the state of California to support the administration of the state’s Tribal Medication-Assisted Treatment (TMAT) project. Funded by California’s State Opioid Response grants from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), TMAT is designed to meet the specific prevention, treatment, and recovery needs of California’s American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) residents with special consideration for Tribal and Urban Indian values, culture, and treatments. TAC provides planning and management support to facilitate the implementation of the project, including development and review support of the TMAT portfolio and deliverables; technical support on Medicaid coverage, financing, and delivery system options to implement substance use disorder (SUD) service delivery by Indian Health Service, Tribal, and Urban Indian providers; and strategic planning support to assess and prioritize additional funding, programmatic, and technical assistance opportunities to better meet the SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery needs of California’s AI/AN communities.
