Landlord Engagement & Unit Acquisition

Uniacquisition is a pressing need for almost all communities working to address and end homelessness. Through direct engagements, TAC has helped communities craft outreach and partnership-building strategies with housing providers to increase the pool of units available to the local homeless population. TAC’s strategies have included planning to set up landlord incentive funds and centralized landlord relationship entities to recruit units for a community’s homeless system; organizing events to recruit property owners; developing marketing strategies; and maximizing available units using shared housing models and homeless or “move-on” preferences.  In communities such as Chicago (IL), Baltimore (MD), and Long Island (NY), TAC has helped recruit property owners to implement homeless preferences in their affordable housing portfolios by assisting with the identification of units, providing administrative plan language, navigating HUD requirements to implement new preferences, and forging partnerships between service providers and property owners to ensure that new tenants are supported.
