In 2024, TAC conducted a review and analysis of New Bedford’s response to preventing and ending homelessness. The research included a document review; a survey of service providers in New Bedford and Bristol Counties; and focus groups with people experiencing homelessness, service providers in the region, and CoC Executive Committee members. Several models were created to project the numbers of people expected to experience unsheltered homelessness over the next 10 years, the need for supportive housing and other variables. The final report recommended expanding supportive housing for homeless individuals with high service needs; medical respite, and hospital partnerships; expanding rapid rehousing and transitional care models to meet a wider range of housing needs; shifting shelter and emergency service models to non-congregate, service-rich programming; and providing flexible financial assistance to prevent homelessness or quickly resolve a housing crisis.
