Jim Yates has over 30 years of experience providing technical assistance and consultation to community organizations and state and local governments regarding the development and financing of permanent supportive housing for low-income disabled persons and other vulnerable populations. He is an expert in affordable housing development, real estate finance, strategic housing planning, federal programs and regulations, program development, and grant writing. Mr. Yates assists communities in effectively utilizing and layering a wide array of federal housing programs, and is also a nationally recognized expert in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care system and programs serving Veterans experiencing homelessness and other “Veterans in need.” He is currently the director of both the VA HPO and SSVF national technical assistance initiatives. Mr. Yates is a retired Colonel in the Army National Guard. He performed three overseas deployments in key leadership positions supporting operations in Bosnia and two combat tours in Afghanistan. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge.
